How would one go about changing the MAC address of the Comcast Netgear Network Router?

I'm trying to help a friend change her IP though her router.

You can change your MAC address easily.
Just use SMAC.

Good Luck.

In most cases, you don't need to do this. If the original configuration is like this:

Cable Modem -> Computer

and then changed to:

Cable Modem -> Netgear Router -> Computer

Then I could see it causing issues. What is occuring is that the ISP keeps a list of the MAC addresses of the connecting devices to the modem and its got them confused after placing the Netgear in between them. Also, in most cases the computer is using a dynamic IP and doesn't need to be reconfigured.

However, if the NetGear was just placed between them, here is how to clone the MAC address of the computer to the router. Its best to have some resources such as installation documentation or websites, so if you can find the model of which Netgear she is using it will make it easer to troubleshoot. Generally there will be a configuration page accessible through the browser by entering the router's IP. The router's IP will likely be 192.168.x.1, but you can verify this by:

Start Menu -> Run -> entering CMD and at the command prompt enter ipconfig /all and look for a line that specifies the default gateway. This command will also list the physical address (MAC address) that you will need later if you have to enter it manually in the configuration page.

With an opened configuration page, you'll be asked for a user name and or password, which she may of changed or was left at default. Refer to the documentation or website for further information regarding default passwords/user names and how to reset them if forgotten.
Once in, you'll have to do some searching around or referencing to the documentation to find a way to "Clone" the MAC to that of the computer.
