In the movie, Dances With Wolves and Stands With A Fist leave the camp and head off to talk to the army or to the government ("someone who would listen"), therefore, accounting for his involvement with the Indians. The Indians left for another camp because they knew that the white soldiers were looking for Dances With Wolves and they didn't want to fight.
In the book, they all leave the camp together. There is a sequel to the book but not to the movie. I checked out the books about a month ago from the library...very interesting.

Dances with Wolves was the first major hollywood production to feature Native American language (find out which one using dogpile or google); it came at a time when dominant (American) culture was eclipsing Native Cultures. Young people growing up on the Rez wanted to be anything but Indian. Dances with Wolves wasnt responsible for it, but it did signal a change in generations -- suddenly it was "cool" to be Indian again; young Native Americans renewed interest in their own languges, cultures and traditions. Again, it wasnt the movie -- but it was a small part of a new renewal. Ironic because the movie itself is about the "end" of Native American lifeways -- and end that never happened.

The guy gets shot in the back and his wife is thrown from a horse and falls over a 500ft cliff killing herself. Very sad.
