Sounds like you have a very immature husband. How do you file a joint return and YOU owe? Joint return would mean you BOTH owe.
At any rate, lesson learned for you...you have serious trust issues with your spouse and I would never trust him again.
From now one, file separate returns (secure your W-2 and take it to have it done by an accountant or a tax place) AND have your tax refund (if there is one) directly deposited to your bank account.

First of all - he did not file a joint return. There is no way you can file a joint return and have one person owe while the other gets a refund. He obviously misled you and filed your two returns as married filing separately. If you were not working, how could you owe money? Did he illegally shift some of his income and report it as yours? He is not to be trusted with your financial affairs. Is this really the kind of man you want to be married to? If he will lie about this he will lie about other things. You should see an accountant and see if you have any recourse to file an amended return or to file an injured spouse complaint. Next year, hopefully you will be divorced and can file as head of household to make up for him having screwed you over.

A marriage is a partnership, an equal union where neither party should hold the reigns. The marriage certificate did not stipulate that he will only consider you if you are working. He is very controlling and selfish. If the bills are not coming first, then there is no reason why you cant buy a $40 purse. If I were you, I would just go out and buy it, and if you dont have access to any funds, then I would be seriously changing this situation. Think of yourself as his equal and demand equal consideration....go out and buy the purse and if he complains...tell him to pull his head in.
Good luck.

Does not matter who works and who does not. All problems as well as money are to be handled by your both. For now let the xbox thing go, but when he starts spending 40 or 50 dollars on games then have a talk

Both of you need to grow up and if you are so far in debt, stop shopping! Do you NEED a new purse? Does he NEED a new xbox? If you are as far in debt as it sounds, you should only be buying necessities and putting the rest of your money on bills.

You let him run over you with the taxes. Next time you file for both, and if you don't know how to do it let a paid pro do it.
Your husband should buy you a purse with that tax return. If he balks take him to small claims court!

Neither one of you should be splurging right now. Use the money he got back to pay the money you owe. After all, he's the one that screwed it up.
