housing here is incredibly expensive no matter what neighborhood you look at; graffitti and gangs; we pay more for gas than most despite our oil production and being on a coast with first access to imported oil; lots of paternal laws; more lawyers in this state than all of Japan; jobs leaving like no tomorrow; clogged freeways no matter what time or day it is

What, without being too simplistic, has and is going wrong?

'illegals' doesnt address the price of housing and gas, paternal laws, or the number of lawyers; it may answer other things, but it is not a 'magic bullet' answer for all of Californias problems

Very good questions, but no one answer to all of it. If I reduce it to one, I would say is the Californian.

California may just be a reflection of the whole country, perhaps more advanced in terms of a mess in some aspect than in another. The economic aspect of housing and gas being expensive is a situation of supply and demand. More people like to stay in California and like to have their own space is the demand for both housing and road. People's love for car is the demand for road and gas. Meanwhile, the supply to meet the demand is both hampered by more regulation and higher cost. This is just the trend for the past several decades.
California has also been very liberal, permissive and less civilized. So, graffitti and tolerance of gangs followed. Many Californian felt the need to have more laws to govern others than to just be taking responsibility of their own action. So, sust as an example, paternal laws followed. With more laws, guess what, more lawyers.

So, if Californian would take responsibility individually, communally, collectively, we can certainly moderate this mess and turn the trend around. Individually, we use more public transportation for needed trips, drive less, take responsibility for our children's misbehavior, less tolerant for vandalism, welfare abuses and crimes, we'll be in a better shape in a couple of generations. Communally and collectively, we can create more positive environment than adversarial environment, we'll have a more sustainable trend to be less of a mess. Life will always be a challenge. Often, we are just our own worst enemy.

I live in San Diego and the cost of living here is very high. But I don't know about the rest of the state; particularly the northern part of California, or the central inland state sections.

How did CA get to be in such a mess? I don't know. There doesn't appear any state-citizen cohesiveness. It's like southern California is whole different country apart from the rest.

Hollywood seems to have more clout than we knew . After all -they just became the elite masses who crowned algore king -
giving the "credibility" he needed to continue his global b.s. spin .
Proving once again...liberal democrats never have an answer ..or a plan - except schemes geared to raise taxes and put more government control in the lives of the peons .
- As for algore-the day after his big science fiction win in Hollyweird - the hypocrite was exposed with his 5 figure a month energy bills .
