We do not need it, we just have it.

Winter happens because of the earth's equator is inclined about 23 degress relative to the orbital plane.

I gave a similar answer to another question, the link is below.

Because the earth needs a 'vacation' just as much as a person does ... and because the 'cold weather' we get during 'winter' isn't THE WHOLE EARTH at once, but is in the northern hemisphere between 'late December' and 'late March' but is in the southern hemisphere between late June and late September but there is not any real 'winter weather' close to the equator, this tells us that we 'get' the weather because our planet is 'tilted' slightly, and goes around the sun in a 'set pattern' every year ... so we don't really 'need' winter as much as we 'have seasons' because of the 'earth's position in relationship to the sun' in 'astronomical terms' ...

Some plants need a rest so they can come up & their flowers can show their pritty faces in the Spring ..balbs need real cold weather before they can sprout & come back up
We need snow to pertect the plants like Roses .
Each change in weather does something to the trees & bushes & other plants . Each change is really some special to see .
Can't wait till spring :-)

If we didn't have it ultimately this planet would be uninhabitable. Well, it will be eventually, but it would happen sooner than later....
