My cars temp has never raised above the 210 until recently, now when i'm in traffic the needle goes past it and almost redlines... I have also noticed that recently my heater will work fine on the freeway but when I get off the freeway and get into commute traffic the heating air turns cold. My questions are; 1) What could be causing these problems, 2) Are they related, 3) What can I do to fix them? Thanks

Couple of things it could be but first check to see if you are low on coolant. Sounds like the level might be low. You didn't say if you already checked this or not so you may just need to add some. Then if it keeps doing it you need further diagnosis.

Only an idiot who knows nothing about a cooling system would tell you to use a cooler thermostat. That has no effect whatsoever on overheating and will cause your engine to run poorly. The reason the engine is ok on the freeway is because you're getting better airflow through the radiator at those speeds and the tear pump is going all out.
The thing you're describing is usually caused by low coolant level. You stop getting water to the heater core and the temp gauge is measuring steam because the level has dropped below the sensor.

Check your heater core first, next check the fan for the heater, and you could have a faulty blower motor...The temp probablem is most likely the thermostat, replace with lower temp setting equiptment. If all else fails shot it...Oh yeah check all your hoses for pin hole leaks....
