Basic needs are:

1. Food: Omnivorous; the food varies with season and availability. Cottontails, cotton rats, pocket gophers, pocket mice, doves, quail, sparrows, blackbirds, towhees, small mammals, insects, small birds, persimmons,acorns, crayfish, etc.

2. Shelter: Rock piles, under rocks, in piles of brush, or in other sites that offer concealment and protection.

3. Reproduction: Breeding season December to March. 3 to 6 pups make a litter.

4. Survival: Well camouflaged. Essentially an inhabitant of wooded areas, particularly mixed hardwood forests.
