The first step is to find the ratio of the shadows.

100/8 = 12.5

Now apply that in reverse to the heights.

4*12.5 = 50

The building was 50m high.

Hope this helps!

the building cast a shadow of 100 meters
and the flagpole has a shadow of 8m and a height of 4m

100 8 <== shadow
----- = -----
x 4 <== length

The point is to find x so you cross multiply

8x = 4x100
8x = 400
x = 400/8
x= 50
The building is 50 meters high!

4 is to 8 as x is to 100
4/8 = x/100
cross multiply
8x = 400
x= 50
