Yes, it has something to do with your Internet Connection and Modem/Router

Do not remove it, or you will have problems.

That depends on the modem that you have there.If your modem holds internet settings(pppoe) then you don't need that profile.But if it's just a basic broadband modem then you definitely need that, because that's the one holding your internet settings.Make sure too that Local Area Connection is Enabled/Connected.

PPPoE is necessary for DSL but not for other services like Verizon FiOS. I have FiOS and PPPoE is disabled in the router's control panel. So depending on your service and your service provider, you may or may not need this.
