It depends on what you want in a quarterback before you answer that question. While Payton may be a decent passer, he's behind a high-quality line that does a good job at protecting him from the rush. Often I've observed that he can be flustered if you get enough people to rush him (one of the reasons why he picked apart Chicago, they had few people on the rush). He's got decent receivers like Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, as well as Dallas Clark at tight end. However, Payton often seems to have problems scrambling, making him very dependant on the pocket being clear.

As quarterbacks go, he doesn't have the most rings (like the 49er's Montana or the Steeler's Bradshaw), or the most records (like Dan Marino). He doesn't call his own plays (coaches do that now). So, I think that Manning is a decent quarterback with an excellent supporting cast. He's good, but not great.

As for some of the best quarterbacks go, Montana's high up there, along with Bradshaw (although his overal record was hurt by his first few years in the spot), Elway, Marino, and Namath. Manning is getting up there, but he's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination.

No it is Joe Montana, Peyton has 3 great receivers that he had for all his career. Joe Montana had a young Jerry Rice, he didn't have him his whole career. And not to mention 4 Super Bowl rings and an outstanding play-off record. Manning is like 8-8 or something. Records don't make you the best QB. So why doesn't Marino be the best QB ever. He has more records than Peyton.

first of all dan marino holds the record for most yards in a season. secondly everyone knows the greatest quarterback ever is Joe Montana not just because he has 4 super bowl rings but because 1. he is the only qb ever to lead a team in the afc and in the nfc to a championship game. 2. his incredible record in the playoffs when it counts thats where peyton fails i know he just won the super bowl but take a look at his stats for the playoffs the only reason he won this year is because the colts pulled together as a team. being great in the regular season doesn't make you a great qb it's how you act under pressure.

Well...he's making a strong case for himself, that's for damn sure. I want to see him win some more super bowls before it's difinitive though. I think by the end of his career, he'll have the most TDs...best passer rating...most passing yards...and possibly most consecutive starts (if he hangs around that long)....so add all that with another super bowl or two...and yeah, he may be the best ever....and I'm not even a Colts fan...

And for people arguing that he has good receivers that make him good, have you EVER stopped to think that maybe they're good because MANNING is that good? Seriously, people always think of it as the receivers making the QB...Tom Brady shatters that argument, doesn't he? I think Manning would do just as well without the guys he has (although every QB needs decent WRs at least).

No...If you seriously think that, you are too young or too insane to realize Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Tom Brady (Pats QB), Troy Aikman, John Elway...etc...

As for your "give me more than just has won more Super Bowls" comment...3 to 1 Brady to Manning...Don't worry...I'm not so insane to think that Brady is in Joe Montana's league yet...However, ask me again when Brady gets #4...

If you want stats, its Manning...Frankly, that only counts in fantasy football...but if you want what really counts, championships, it's Brady every time over Manning...

...But to answer your question, Joe Montana is the best QB in NFL history...

...Enough said...

I think hes on his way to being one. If he can continue to be the leader he is and step up in clutch situations along with keeping his stats going the way they are and maybe win another super bowl, I would consider him one of the best ever. even though he oonly has so many years left in him, He should make the most of them and go out in his prime. Then he will be remembered as great.

I think Peyton is the best ever, and if he can win one more ring (and I think he will), more and more people will agree.

He's got the stats, the wins, the ring, and the personality/exposure. And he's a smart, clean-cut, nice guy, which people love. He even has a master's degree! How cool is that?

Even his great days at Tennessee contribute to his legend (even though he was robbed of the Heisman so they could give it to a CB, a position that NEVER gets the Heisman...obviously some politics going on there).

He is in the verge of being one. But however, I dont think he will be the best qb until after he retires, We have to see how well he does when he is old.

Best ever? Not yet. His SB win last year got him into the top 10 maybe but he still has things to prove.
