We have installed a new roof on our house. One problem is that we can't get the b-pipe to pass inspection. The b-pipe is the one for the water heater. I was once told by the inspector that we need a collar. But I don't know what that is.

The pipe needs to be a minimum 1" from combustible materials. He might be talking about a fire stop collar. This is a square piece of sheet metal with a 4" diameter hole cut in it that has "fingers" that come in contact with the b-vent. Where the pipe penetrates the roof, you will need a roof flange, rain collar and a cap to put on the top of the vent.

it sounds like your water heater vent pipe is type b. Where the flue pipe penetrates the roof, there needs to be a collar attached to the flue pipe. This keeps the pipe from touching combustible material and provides a flashing to go around the pipe.

Its basically a round metal ring that you attach to the vent pipe and it goes around the pipe where it penetrates the roof. fireplace stores and plumbing supply stores should be able to get you what you need.

LOOK FOR A TYPICAL INSTALLATION DRAWING. THE DIFFERENT BRANDS DO NOT HAVE COMPATIBLE JOINTS. WHAT EVER YOU BUY HAS TO BE THE SAME BRAND YOU HAVE ALREADY HAVE OR IT WON'T PASS INSPECTION.
