I had an early ultrasound (5 weeks, 6 days), and the Ultrasound tech clearly saw the yolk sac, but could not see the baby. She said, your baby is not there. It may never develop. I asked if it could possibly be just too small to see. She said, maybe, but wait and see. Those words really dampened my excitement about the pregnancy. My doctor was not as doom-and-gloom as the ultrasound tech was, but I was so afraid to get my hopes up.
Finally, I had another ultrasound at 10 1/2 weeks and was so relieved to instantly see the baby - arms and legs a flailing! Had I known that the inconclusive result of the first ultrasound was even a possibility, I would've declined to have it! All that worry over nothing!

I'm just curious how many people have had a doctor, nurse, or other medical staff tell you that something seems to be wrong with your baby.... and they turned out to be wrong?

I am a nurse and the ultrasound tech should have never told you that. First off they are not doctors. It is true that some will only have the yolk sac and it never develop into a baby, but (like in you case) it does. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. Plus you where so early, they should waited until the second ultrasound to see if there was any development.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that, I can imagine it was a very harrowing experience.

I have not experienced what you describe, but I find it interesting... specifically because when I was pregnant with my second child, the ultrasound tech. questioned my estimated due date when she was taking the measurements. I told her I couldn't be sure of the date of my last period, so the dates could be off, and asked if there could be something wrong... she told me right away that she was not qualified to say anything, one way or the other.

She stated that she could only record the information she saw and show it to the doctor, who would then interpret it and explain any discrepancies. If the doctor felt anything were of great concern she would order another ultrasound or more tests.

Come to find out, we had simply miscalculated the estimated due date, so the baby was not as far along as we had thought.

I guess the bottom line here is that you should ask your doctor if you ever have concerns over something the ultrasound tech says or shows you!

These happen and at 5 weeks your baby is wayyy too small, like the size of a pin dot or grain of salt and the only thing u will see is the sac until in the 6th week. With my son i had an u/s done because of light spotting and that was also at 5 + weeks, they told me they wouldnt be able to see anything doing a u/s this early but they would try,he saw a sac and said its wayy too early to see a baby yet and they gave me a diagnosis of a threatened miscarriage *meaning one might happen* my son is now 18 months and smart as can be and just perfect all over. these things are possible and docs dont know as much as they should nowdays..good luck and congrats!!

i had a reversed situation a few years ago.an ultrasound tech told me my baby had no heart beat but was fine it might just be to early to hear it.well long story short i misscarried 2 weeks later.so she was wrong the baby was in danger and although well intended her words gave a false sense of security.
