Where I live, regular is 87 octane, mid-grade is 89, and premium is 93. I know, 89 isn't exactly halfway between 87 and 93. But at the gas station, do they really have three separate tanks? Is mid-grade really a separate formulation? Or when you pump mid-grade, is it just mixing regular and premium?

Mid grade is a blend of low and high octane gas, By law stations always have to round down to the next whole number the octane rating. The mixing goes on underground in the storage tanks, the tanks themselves have what they call submersible pumps,in the liquid. The (pump nozzle we all pick up is actually a valve) that opens and closes as you press the handle. The mixing process is computer managed and all automatic within the separate low octane and high octane tanks.

Yes, There are only two grades of gas at 90% of gas stations. Premium and regular. The mid grade is attached to both and mixes them at the pump.

It depends on the fuel station, some have three underground tanks, some two. Most newer ones have two and it mixes, the older 3-tank configuration stems back to the early 1980's (and before) when leaded fuels were still being sold, which, many gas stations that were built back then and even for many years after are still around today.

Usually. Many gas stations have 2 tanks, one with low octane and one with high octane. The pump draws from the 2 tanks to get the mid grade.
