It sounds like you got a 3- way switch instead of a single switch(the switch will have 3 screws instead of 2) but you can still use it as a single pole. Put the supply on the common and the load on the the screw above the common screw and dont use the other screw

If the old switch and the new switch have only two connections each, then it doesn't matter how you wire them. Supply connects to the wire coming in, load goes to the fan. The term "common" would only apply if your fan is multi-speed, and the switch has a common connection and several other connections for the different speeds, which would connect to the corresponding fan wires.

Polarity is always an issue.
If the switch is not double pole and located on the neutral only then the supply to the appliance itself is still live even when the switch is off.

bathroom fan switches are normally triple pole if the fan is a timed unit. The common is the input Live Neutral ,Switched live, the load is the cable that goes to the fan .Any doubts consult a qualified electrician.

on a switch it doesn't matter as polarity isn't an issue. A switch interrupts. Now if it is a multi switch, then the common is power in and all the rest are power out.

How many wires 2
how many screws 2
If you have more that 2 you have a neutral in there , let me try this
You have a sw for the light , there should be a short in lenght wire coming off that sw . for the light
then you should have a wire usually black coming down from the fan
turn power on and off messing with it , it won;t hurt ya real bad but ???/
