There are cats and dogs that roam about and last year, my plants got eaten, smashed, trampled, and basically ruined. I would like a safe, humane, and effective way to keep them out of my flowers. Any serious answers would help.

As others answered an electric fence works great . and they are not expensive and almost invisible . after leaving on for about a month you can turn it off and the animals will not get close to the wire again. Another way is to put mouse traps scattered around , without bait of course . when an animal such as a cat steps on it it makes a loud popping sound and scares the **** out of them , I have done this in large porch flower pots where cats love to do there buisness and it has worked great. After a few times you dont even have to set traps anymore just leave a few laying around .

like the first guy said electric fence, it is not cruel, what is cruel is doing all the work in the garden to see dogs and cats tear it up. you worked hard so protect it.
