A short, but scholarly explanation would be....

When they first arrived the local inhabitants thought they where gods. They used that to make thier initial beachhead. Then with thier advanced weapons and armor (gunpowder, pistols and rifles, canon, plate armor, and horses) combined with the simple will to do it and a religious conviction that they where doing good for god and country, they could kill nearly at will the larger but more poorly armed and trained combatents.
