I remember this song, hearing it in the 60' and early 70's thinking back I wonder if it was supposed to mean something. I am Cherokee, and I was a little girl at the time. I'd just like a little history about it.

It was a band called Paul Revere and the Raiders. What their motive might have been for doing the song, I couldn't tell you. Native American issues were the cause celeb of the day - there were many excellent movies about Native Americans made at the time - and maybe they were riding the wave. I always liked that song a lot - I hope their motives were good.

not sure who actually wrote it, but it was performed by Paul Revere and the Raiders...Mark Lindsay was the lead singer, and rumor was he had agreed to do the song because some AIM (American Indian Movement) warriors had threatened his family. I think that's bs but it was a great song.

Mark Lindsay, formerly of Paul Revere and the Raiders.

It was a cheap exploitation song; he started wearing darker makeup to make himself look more ethnic. He did it for the money.
