Got to keep it comfortable, and outta the way so you dont be tripping on it. No drafts, no extreme colds or heats, no direct sunlight but not completely dark. Some where easy to clean and not easy for the ferret to escape from if he jumps out when your feeding him or something. Might need to re arrange the to get it in. Ferrets need large cages.
ASHLEY FYI ferrets are NOT rodents, they are carnivores, and they are weasle. Like a cat, so please you two above me keep comments to yourself or be reported. Be constructive please.

attic, garage, porch.... Are you kidding!!! I have never heard such horrible places. Number one ferrets ARE NOT related to RATS in any way they are related to badgers, polecats and the like to the one eww reply you got anyway next your bedroom sounds like the most suitable place- it'll have quiet time there to sleep and hopefully you'll make sure you get it out of the cage at least 4 hours a day and still ferretproof everything. Make sure he isn't near a window to catch a draft as ferrets are sensitive animals and can catch the common cold, flu, rabies etc. Please read up on them they are very complicated animals. They are not cuddly for the most part but they are tons of fun to just sit back and watch. They get into everything and you ahve to clean their cages constantly to make sure your house doesn't start stinking that includes washing everything in your cage at least once a week. I have seen to many people have to get rid of their ferrets cause their roommate or their parents said they stunk or that didn't realize the financial responsibility of such a small animal. They can cost more then a dog- and their food costs as much. Don't think cheap food will get you buy because the poorer quality food you give them the more of an odor they will put out they are carnivores after all and cannot digest vegetables and fruit.

Adult male rats can live in a ferret cages as long as the bar spacing is no more than 1 inch. You could also get a chinchilla but they need bigger cages. How big is the old ferret cage?

I would not reccommend putting the ferret outside, because they escape easily, and other animals could get at it. The garage would be okay if it is temperature controlled. An attic wouldn't be a terrible idea, except that if it escapes, it will have easy access to air ducts and outside escape routes. Your best bet would probably be in your bedroom, or an area in your house that people hang out in often. Many times, an animal that is set aside to a slow place in the house is forgotten and not taken care of.

Ferrets can be kept both outside and inside, in a large cage(inside) or Hutch(outside). If outside temperatures, and common illnesses must be taken to consideration and the hutch/cage must be able to be covered, many people use shed's for outside. However if you want you ferret to be more fond of you and people in general keep it inside. DO NOT DESCENT unless your ferret is at risk, it is unnecessary and causes health problems in ferrets but DO NEUTER (after 6 months only or more severe problems that will rack up huge vets bills). If you do not neuter your ferret, you could not only contribute to the huge over-population problem from which ferrets are killed daily, if you ferret is female she could easily die. The ferret mating process is exceptionall violent should you decide to mate ferrets and it is not uncommon for jills to pass away during these times. You should be able to have easy communication with your ferret so your room is probably best, also it is often easier to ferret proof your own room than a room used by family etc.
MUST be fed ferret specialty dry food (NOT CAT or even more importantly DOG FOOD) or/and raw meat Chicken and beef only. Pork causes problems. Contrary to popular belief, ferrets rarely catch salmonella within reason, so chicken/turkey/duck are brilliant foods for them. Give chicken wings/ necks to prevent tooth decay and cancer.
Do not bathe more than twice a month though if possible, only once a month, the more you wash them the more they will smell, instead wash its bedding at least weekly.
Ferrets are clever, they can be trained, but they can also create havoc. Opening cuboards/drawers/zips. They can be owned as pets or used for working purposes such as hunting and laying cables. Ferrets were used to lay TV cables at Price Charles' wedding and have been used to lay cables under traintracks where people can't access.
As with all animals if you own one or more they are your responsibility to care for, they can't do anything to help themselves. If you can adopt, if not buy from a respectable breeder. Farmed Ferrets can come with more problems than thought possible.
Therefore lol! My summary is to keep your ferret in your room! Good luck. Research is the key. There is enough info out there!

Put the cage in a room you don't mind getting a little stinky, incase you forget to clean the cage. Or better your room because ferrets like to match there sleeping paterns to there owners

I would put it in your room that way it wouldnt get too hot nor too cold and you can keep it around you so that he's not forgotten... the more you see him the more you will want to play with him and have him run around the house like a little kitty =) they are so funny to have... but get its scent glands removed so it wont stink up you house.. some ferrets come unscented already they cost about 100$

A ferrets cage has to be, like 3ft high. and 3ft wide. something like that. They like getting out of their cage too. So consider this before getting one.

In your bedroom. What do you mean outside!! Please research the care of these animals further. I do not think you are prepared enough to purchase a ferret.
