The combination that you propose will have one specie or the other in the wrong kind of water. Frontosa require a high pH and moderately high hardness numbers. South Americans need soft water with a low pH. Someone or maybe both types will not be getting what they need to thrive. To really do the right thing for your fish pets. Find out what kind of water you have and choose your fish accordingly. Trying to maintain fish in water that is not suited to them is difficult and cruel, and trying to create a different kind of water than that which is easily available to you usually only winds up stressing the fish.Keeping fish in easily available water makes a healthy tank much easier to achieve with a lot less stress to the fish-keeper ,too.-----Hope this is helpful. Good luck.----PeeTee

Although the Frontosa is an extremely peaceful fish, it is an African cichlid and must be kept with other Africans.
You must never mix South American and African cichlids together as the tank set ups are very different and so are the optimum water conditions such as pH.
Go to www.cichlids.com and cruise around for awhile, you'll learn a lot about them and you may find other tank mates for your Frontosa with which to start a new tank.
