Advertising ruins TV.
The ads themselves are annoying, deceptive, sometimes evil. And TV shows cater to the advertisers, or the content is influenced greatly by the advertisers (I'm sure many TV shows of all kinds have self-edited themselves at the expense of truth, so as not to offend the precious advertisers).

Also, TV shows cater to the lowest common denominator and care more about shocking and aweing the audience than providing informative or useful information. The Discovery Channel, History Channel, A&E etc have been destroyed by trying to keep the average fat slob entertained.
My TV has been dark for a very long time, but my mind has brightened in accordance.
Good Riddance BOOB TUBE.

Watching TV is Unhealthy for your brain and any current relationships that you have around you. TV has become the babysitter of the decade and look at the kids now. It is not good to watch TV for long periods of time.

Well when you are watching tv you are not being active you are sitting there like a lump no exercise so it is physically not that good for you. If you are watching just silly programs than you are not expanding your mind or learning anything so it is worthless. O.k. now that I have answerd your question I want to qualify it with saying I still watch tv and I enjoy watching some silly non educational programs

Watching TV may not necessarily be 'worthless' but it all depends what you are watching. It may be unhealthy, especially for the younger audience, because of the violence and other negative things they see on it. It all depends on the person and how they react.

According to Juliet Schor's research in her book The Overspent American, the more TV the average person watches, the poorer he or she is likely to be.

She also finds a correlation between what people watch and financial strata. Wealthy people don't tend to watch much outside of the news. My Wednesday morning breakfast group (we don't have a good name for ourselves, we're just friends who all earn in excess of $50k / year FROM ASSETS that enjoy each other's company once a week) has nine members. Six of us like MSNBC and CNBC. Two of us are CCN / CNBC guys and one of us (the new girl who doesn't actually have the base level of resources but the rest of us like her energy) watches Fox News and nothing else. I know that doesn't say anything empirical but it's anecdotally interesting...
