To many people something funny can not be funny. Let's say i make a joke about religion. A person with a good sense of humor may thinki it is funny but others will consider it offensive. Laughing and smiling is necessary for the human mind. When we smile or laugh our brain secretes endorphines which generally makes us feel good.
Humor is what we think is funny. A freind of mine who is blonde, Love blonde jokes because she has a good sense of humor. She retells them whenever possible.

Usually embarrassing cringe-making events that may have happened to you or you would dread happening.

Can involve exaggeration of ordinary feelings or events but risk of coming across as shtick (boooring), but often it's that little twist in the normal scenario that tickles us.

Think it can be close to meanness of spirit when pleasure is derived from witnessing pain or embarrassment of others which is maybe why some subjects are almost off-limits (but surely nothing is completely so), but there is a line. Trouble is in ultra-PC current state of mind which makes us nervous of laughing at certain groups, certain disabilities, certain roles, but we should be able to laugh at anything and anyone - most of all ourselves.
