chips of ice ... lol. just little chuncks of ice...i love them. its like the crushed ice you can get out of the refridgerator. yummy.

As the others have said, ice chips are just little pieces of ice.
The reason that hospitals advocate giving them to a woman in labor is because many hospitals are still stuck in the archaic belief that a woman should not eat during labor.
There used to be a time when hospitals would knock women out with heavy drugs during labor so that they could not feel the birth - and if a woman had eaten anything prior, and vomited while unconscious and lying down, she could aspirate or choke to death. However, in these modern times, even if you should have to be put under general anesthesia (which is unlikely, but for emergency c-sect. maybe) they can keep an eye on you to make sure nothing comes up, and insert a breathing tube or even pump your stomach if they have to.
Labor is the hardest thing you can put your body through, and if you're hungry, you should eat real food!
Screw the ice, if you want to eat when you're in labor have someone bring you food.

ice chips are just ice. like small ice cubes. you are not allowed to eat or drink before or during labor so they give you ice chips and popsicles.
