In "The Red-Headed League" Holmes is hired to investigate a trivial fraud and ends up discovering a plan to rob a bank.

I can't remember the name of the story but there is one Holmes story that begins with a dog NOT barking at a supposed thief/stranger in the middle of the night.

"The Scandal of Bohemia" and "The Red Headed League" are good short stories to read if you're just starting.
