I have long been a fan of PCs, but after all the viruses and updates and patches I've had to install over the years to my networked computers, I'm really getting tired of it all. A friend who is an avid MAC user, insists they don't get viruses like PCs do. Is this true??

Macs can still get viruses. But since so many more people use PCs than Macs most viruses are aimed at PCs.
No matter what type of computer you have, you should have an anti-virus program on it. So no matter what you will have to deal with updates and patches, etc.
Stick with what you like.

Any PC can get a virus although Macs do get less but all computers need anti virus and a firewall these days not to mention a spy-ware program. To the person that said he has used his computer for 6 years and never had a virus I would love for him to tell me how he knows this because if you have no protection software you may not realize you have a virus or spy ware.As far as the stability and quality of a Mac PC there is none better there OS and browser is far superior to any Windows OS and Browser ever produced.I am a Windows type PC user but I will change to a Mac someday. You can run most Windows programs on Macs these days since they changed to an Intel processor. Honestly though both have advantages and disadvantages so its like most things in life it is a personal choice. Now if you built your own PC and ran a Open Source Operating System such as Linux,Red Hat Fedora ,Ubuntu ,SUSE which are all basically Linux based Operating Systems you would have a more secure PC then either Windows or Mac.

Macs have a lot less viruses. Here are the reasons:

1. Less people have Macs, so not as much point in making viruses.
2. Macs are much less powerful than PCs, and so disliked by hackers and virusmakers, and also by gamers.
3. The registry for Macs is split up, and therefore much more secure. A Windows installation keeps every important files IN ONE FOLDER. Which is really pretty stupid.

First of all...Mac, not MAC.

Second of all, the first post is inaccurate.. That was correct back in the days of Mac OS 7. Mac OS X has 4 viruses, all of which Apple has patched, and Windows has 114,000 viruses, all of which Microsoft has been struggling to patch. In March 2005 alone, almost 800 viruses were released for the PC. None for Mac. This is due to it's strong UNIX programming.

Your friend is correct. :)

Absolutely true. I've owned Macs since the 1980s and have never had a virus. We thought out going the PC route about 10 years ago but the sales guy advised against it, saying that Macs are risk-free for viruses.

And besides you can't beat the user friendliness with Macs, iPods and all the rest. They are really intuitive, as the awesome Mac vs. PC commercials point out.

True, Macs get much less viruses and spyware and if you can get a Mac that boot Windows then you can have the best of both worlds and use Mac whenever you think you might encounter a virus.

Ive used PC's for over 6 years now and NEVER encountered a virus, I don't even have an antivirus for that matter, most people who switch to macs switch to it due to an ignorance in their usage and knowledge in general, the same people who just figured out that that "cup holder" is actually a CD tray.
