80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

As individuals the purpose is limited. As a permutation of the biomass, the human species has a very specific goal and that is to evolve to the next level. It is the same with every permutation, be it an amoeba or a cedar or a human. without death as a prime motivator then evolution would stagnate. This begs the greater question. What is the purpose of evolution? Again, outside of the single permutation scope, it is the biomass as a whole that is evolving. Why? If considered in the context of entropy, where all things break down from a higher order towards chaotic complexity we can see the original primordial soup as one of high entropy and present life on the planet as being of low entropy. This lower state of entropy is a universal direction that is probably occurring across the galaxy and the universe at a predictable rate, the same as galaxies coalesced at a predictable rate. The biomass as a consistent mass organism on the planet is attempting to create the one permutation necessary that will have the capabilities of self evolution. In humans it may have finally achieved that goal. Necessity is the mother of evolution. The very nature of humans as a species inclines us towards self evolution because we are not only virulent but clever as well. Through self inflicted necessity we shall be forced to engineer the next evolutionary phase thereby fulfilling the biomass's subliminal design and creating a species of life capable of moving off the limited biosphere and seeding the galaxy with it's spores.

The purpose of life is for our Souls to grow and learn. We grow at a much faster rate when we experience life rather than on the Other side.
We elect to come to earth. We even pick our parents and siblings. We elect our Destiny. The more trials and tribulations you have while here and the more you tackle correctly, the stronger you become and the more your soul grows toward God.
God wants us to learn these in life for our Souls:
wisdom, patience, understanding, forgiveness, courage, hope, faith, tolerance, compassion, and Love.
Think about it. If we learn these are we not perfect. Perfect in Gods eyes. How many lifetimes does it take to learn these and learn them well?
I can tell you I stumble and struggle and I am sure you do to. Just when I think I am doing well with Patience, I falter. I get angry at other drivers or those around me. It is hard work but rewarding in the end.
ALL ROADS LEAD TO ETERNAL LIFE.
Remember that.

The exact purpose of life is to live for others.
If you have done something constructive for others then that causes the more happiness than you have done 10 constructive works for yourself.
