It all depends how time is defined. A period of one day may define the events that occurred on that day. If time is a measure of the number of events that occurs in one day of accomplishements, and each event took 86000 secondsand one trillion events took place;then one day would equal 86000 trillon seconds. However if all the phenomena of one trillion event took place at the same time then, one day of accomplisment would take 86000 seconds.
So time depends how one defines one day.
The Universe was Created as a system to maintain its own equilibrium. So outside of that we can not really say the Universe is going to contract or expend and do funny things for no reason at all,And ask what then happens.
Lets look at it this way ;=The Universe is well designed system.

technically time never started. once animals with brains appeared there was something to percieve time. untill then time couldn't have been percieved, but it did technically exist. and there is no proof that the universe will ever contract. there would have to be a substantial amount of mass that can never be achieved because mass isn't going to be created.

Obviously, nothing could have existed before time started. A better question is, did time start, or is time infinite.

That question is not answerable because without time, there is no concept of "before" and "after."
