One reason could be a feeling that God has betrayed them or let them down, if they experience a very negative event or life situation. Another reason could be advanced education, and they have come to the conclusion that religion (and therefore God) is irrational and not based on scientifically verifiable truths. A third reason could be that they were raised by people for whom religion was unimportant - "inherited atheism", if you will. Remember that one can believe in a Supreme Being without following or believing in an established religion; such people cannot be called athiests.

Well, the word A-theist, comes from the greek words A (which means not/without) and theos (which means god in the sense of superior power). So the combination of these words means no God. People who become atheists are people who need to see to believe, people who are confused with their "tradional" religion and people who like to be different. It's mainly a fashion trend now. People confuse the word Atheist with Agnostic. Agnostics are people who do not believe in something that they do not have the knowledge about it. Nobody has the knowledge of certain ultimate existence, life after death, etc. meaning that they do not beleive in something they do not know exists. It's the same with ghosts.. Do you believ in them or do you have the knowledge that they exist.
Knowledge is the enemy of religion. Fear is religions friend. As long as there is fear in people, they will always believe in something. Call it God, call it Buddha, call it Allah, call it whatever you want. The more poeple are educated, read and thing logically religion will fade. You have a choice believe or not believe in something. The more you know the less you believe.

Three main ones.
1. Mastering reason and educated thinking--science--definitions by 5--6 internal working characteristics of things--they find that their thinking, checked back against the real world, is perfectly capable of predicting and controlling results. So they don't need revelations or another universe.
2. There's no proof offered by any religion's so-called annunciators--and without it, who give up this world for the next, and reason for "faith" in what your new postmodernist guide is telling you awaits you after death?
3. They look at the horrible record of hypocrisy, martyr murders and imprisonments, lies, deceits,, thisworldly failures achieved by those who set reality aside to pretend something else is a lot better--and they reject the whim of such failed minds to hold worldly power and claim "pragmatism"--the opposite of practicality, as their excuse for fastening infallible-leader tyranny onto the now-blighted lives of enforced obedients.

Major major turnoff - fundamentalists from any religion and before anti-Muslims say yeah, I was thinking initially of Christian fundamentalists with their self-delusional self-belief and barefaced ignorance, but then any hardline fundamentalist will fall into that catagory.
De Niro said it best when his reply to question over what he'd say to God was along the lines of what a lousy job he, oh paaardon, He is doing.

Variety of reasons actually. Two main reasons: A false god has been taught to them, a god who is always angry, a monster god.
They're too much in their heads. Faith resides in the intellect and if you can't use reason with something, it must be false.
