In theory, a profit based university can work.

In practice, they do not deliver educations that employers will take seriously. The troubles at the University of Phoenix have tainted the entire industry (e.g., the $9.8MM fine for sleazy recruiting practices, the investigation into padding their recruiting numbers, companies like Intel refusing to pay for employees to take classes there because they lack rigor, etc).
