Personally I don't like the combo in the order that it is.
"Hunter" to me is almost a nickname, it doesn't seem a proper first name. I see it as a good middle name. Maybe naming your son Matthew Hunter would sound better. It rolls off the tongue easier, and if you still want to call him Hunter that's fine, as a good portion of my friends go by their middle names.
I would flip it around simply so when the full name is required, it sounds better, while still allowing you to call him Hunter. (also realize that your children have to live with whatever name you give them. Some people, like myself, don't fancy the name Hunter and wouldn't want to be named that, and having the unusual name be the middle one would allow him to go by either name a little more naturally)
I do like the two names together.

Sounds kind of like two first names put together, not a first and middle combination. Maybe because they both have 2 syllables in them? Maybe Hunter Mathias would be better?

Matthew is fine but Hunter is just so vulgar sounding. It just seems like a hunter going after some deer and killing it. i just hate it.
