I was under the impression that LeClair isn't playing at the moment.

This season he was waived twice by the penguins. The first time he passed though and no one picked him up. He refused the assignment to the minor league team so the Penguins re-waived him. He went into waivers the second time allowing a team to pick him up and only pay half his salary (the other half paid by Pittsburgh). He still didn't get picked up. At that point he was released by the team and went home to the Philadelphia area. I believe he is still here. I haven't heard of any team (not even the Flyers as I though they might) try to sign him.

Former 50-goal scorer John LeClair was demoted by the Pittsburgh Penguins to the club's American Hockey League affiliate on Saturday.

Pittsburgh placed LeClair on waivers on Thursday but decided to send him down to the AHL's Wilkes-Barre-Scranton Penguins when no other NHL team claimed him off waivers.

John LeClair was a healthy scratch in two of Pittsburgh's last six games.
(Gene J. Puskar/Associated Press) The 37-year-old left-winger has struggled this season with two goals and five assists in 21 games.

He is in the final season of a two-year deal worth $1.5 million US with the Penguins. LeClair signed with Pittsburgh in August 2005 following the NHL's lengthy labour impasse.

LeClair had 22 goals and 51 points in 2005-06, but his ice time dropped off this season after the Penguins added rookies Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal.

Johnny LeClair is one of my favorites. The Pens are my team...

Unfortunately he was cut from the team. He is a GREAT player but did not fit well with the Pens organization or played well. Yea some people may say his ice time was cut but the truth to the matter is it was not a good fit.. He should have been picked up by another team than needed leadership and veterans in the locker room. Florida, Carolina (GREAT fit since Rod B. is there), should have looked at him hard…

I WOULD ASSUME IT'S BEING CALLED A RECONDITIONING STINT
BUT IF THE TRUTH WERE KNOWN
IT'S TO REDUCE THE CAP SPACE ALLOWED FOR HIS TEAM
HE'LL PROBABLY BE BROUGHT UP JUST BEFORE THE PLAYOFFS BEGIN
HOCKEY MORE THAN EVER IS NOW A BUISNESS OF FUDGING THE NUMBERS
AND SOMETIMES GREAT PLAYERS ARE KEPT IN THE MINORS OR SENT DOWN JUST SO ALL THE X'S AND 0'S AND NUMBERS ADD UP SO YOUR BELOW THE SALARY CAP

I would think it's because he played 27 games this year and only had 7 points. Plus he's 38. Just a guess though

He's playing? Heck I didn't know he was even in the minors.Yeah he it is likely reconditioning type thing. The Penguins didn't really need him. They sent him to the minors and didn't really expect him to report.
