Anybody can be a teacher providing they have a skill that is demand and that they can encourage and enable the learning of that skill. The first part addresses professionalism in teaching - the second to the craft of teaching. Both processes require that the teacher be a life long learner.
However, not everybody should be a teacher. It is a job you either love or loathe - not much grey. If you loathe it, that's when you do your future students a favour by doing something else.

More than the education (4 years), more than the ability to "handle" students (try 35 per class in many cases), teaching is a calling. It is NOT a profession for someone who wants summers off (you don't get paid for them anyway). You must constantly update your education at your own expense. You must posses the desire to be a GOOD teacher to keep trying new methods of reaching students, teaching students with special needs in the same class as gifted students and all the in between and teach them differently. You need to help them learn themselves, it is not just standing in front of a class talking, you must motivate them to WANT to learn.
If you are willing to spend money out of your own pocket for treats, motivators and class supplies, if you are willing to spend almost every evening grading papers, if you can listen to a child you love tell you how he is abused at home, if you can make the average of 2,000 decisions per day...because, you know, even if you teach kindergarden, this Is rocket science, you can be a teacher. If you still feel you want to be a teacher then WELCOME to a very rewarding career., we need people like you.

You did not give enough info in your question to give you an accurate ans. If you are wanting to teach younger children, like in a head start or preschool setting, all that takes is a CDA in most states and that can be earned at a vocational school or community college in less than 2 yrs.
If you wish to teach grades k-12 you need the traditional four year degree and major in Education

If you study the subject you want to teach ( ex. English ) and took the masters and you think you can handle students in your classroom. Then you can be a teacher.

if you have a college degree, quite a few states have programs that will give you a classroom before you have the education degree. also check out Teach for America. if you know that you want to teach........... go get that degree though.
