smile and nod seems to be the only way to put up with them, if they are really full of crap how about challenging them when they tell a lie and embarrass them. this done a few times might make them less likely to start going on and on to you. If all fails how about investing in a good music player and plug in earphones!! I have a work colleague exactly like that too and he is so full of himself and so full of crap that when he stops talking he would have to climb really high to get out of the huge pile of shite that he just created, if you know what I mean! the fun side about him is that I can have a great laugh about him by discussing his silly antics to other colleagues. The best way is just to nod while that person is talking and have a nice song playing in your head. ignore him but act interested. what have you tried so far? good luck

Ignore them or just grin every time another untruth is uttered. Laugh with other work colleagues so they get the idea you are taking the mickey out of them without actually saying a word.

Behaviour is functional - it serves a purpose.
The braggart often over-compensates for feelings of inferiority. In reality they are insecure and may have low self-esteem.
Annoying as it can be, try to see this behaviour for what it is. Remain polite but distant in the knowledge that you know the score about this person.
People who have a negative affect on you are best avoided.

Wow, I'm so glad I read this page, I now know that my husband is a narcissist. I just read up a lot about it on the net and it totally describes him and answers a lot of questions for me. I could never put my finger on why he was so bigheaded and always self-praising, always the best and cleverer than any of our friends. He's also a control freak. Now I know why.

Whatever you do, don't become friends with them. I have someone at work who is like what you described, and mine has latched onto me like a barnacle. These people are manipulative and you need to keep them at a distance. Although try to stay polite and cordial with them. They tend to be critical and turn on people they think are against them - stay out of the line of fire. Good luck to you.

Can you walk away during the conversation? Roll your eyes? Throw up your hand and say..."sorry, I don't have time for idle chatter, I have work to do."
Or -- you could just ignore them, and realize that everyone else probably recognizes the truth about the person, too.

Its sounds like a narcissistic disorder. This is a very tough problem to fix, simply because it is in their nature not to think their characteristics are faulty at all. Read more about it here.
