Don't use a lighter or a nail polish remover. The lighter will melt the plastic and the nail polish remover will eat at the plastic.
I'd say soak in water to get rid of the paper part of the sticker. Then to get rid of the gooey part you can use rubbing alcohol. Put it on a cotton ball or facial pad and just rub in circles. The alcohol will cause the gooey stuff to ball up and eventually stick to whatever your using to rub it with. If you use enough alcohol it will keep the dishes wet and not allow the gooey stuff to stick to it again.

Don't try to peel the sticker off. Use lemon juice or a product called Goo Gone that you can pick up at any drugstore or hardware. Take a cotton ball and dab it all around the sticker making sure that it penetrates through the middle. Use a plastic "razor blade" (also found at hardware stores) to scrape it off. Once you do that, rub the cotton ball on it again to remove the leftover residue and you are ready to wash the item either by hand or in the dishwasher. Good luck!

Soak the dishes in some hot dishwater that should work because the paper will fall off and then you can scrub with a dish cloth(no steel wool) to get the adhesive off. It should work.

Easiest way: get WD-40 (at any hardware store) or rubbing alcohol, saturate the sticker, wait about 10 minutes, get a single-edged razor blade or window-paint knife, and peel them off

Goo Gone or Goof Off.
The stickers and any sticky residue just wipe away.

Try Goo Gone. It takes off everything! You can get a small bottle at Walmart for a few bucks.

Try heating the stickers with a blow dryer. They should peel off then.

Use your blow dryer/hair dryer to lift the stickers off, that is the best and effective way.

I second the WD-40 suggestion. Also good for getting gum out of your child's hair when all else fails.
