Any formula with added iron could cause constipation in a 4-month-old. You should not supplement with iron until about 6 months. Another thing to watch for is if it is cow's milk formula. A small percentage of babies are allergic to the protein in cow's milk. They usually outgrow it by about 2 years old. My oldest son fell into this category. He was about 26 months old before he had his first mac and cheese and pizza. Unlike lactose intolerance, there is nothing to be done for he protein allergy except to avoid all dairy products.

Don't know of any reason why an organic formula would be causing constipation unless baby is intolerant of daiy. then perhaps a soy organic formula could be used such as Baby's Only Organic Soy Formula. Also, are you breastfeeding and supplementing with a formula now? If so, could be baby's digestive tract is just getting used to the change. If the stools are like rabbit pellets, see you peds ASAP! Hope this helps.

My son had a change in bowel movements at 4months, He was on organic formula and breastmilk...If you have started rice cereal (?) this can have an effect on things... Talk with your pediatrican/nurse first but I was able to use an ounce to ounce and 1/2 of organic prune juice (Knudesen brand?) from Whole Foods mixed in with the formula. This really moved things along.

When you start solids, if you notice her bm's having issues again, lay off rice cereal and use oatmeal instead. When you start with first foods remember that bananas and rice are binding and that foods which start with a p are great to get things going... ie peaches, plums, pears, prunes..

Good luck.
