I recently read a question that stated that Dan Brown was the worst bestselling author still writing. That's a load of bllocks. His characters are so well developed. His books provide twists and turns and suspense. His plots are rich and his books are filled with researcher. That's why he's one of the bestselling novelists today and not just fo Da Vinci Code. He's written a pileof great books.

I think they are right, and disagree with your opinion. I felt the characters to be rather shallow. The story line only slightly better than a high school boy's secret agent book and quite predictable. His historic references and facts were very weakly matched to the real world, and most that he did present were quite wrong. He really is not too far removed from the romance novels by the register at the super market checkout.

In the DaVinci Code, his characters are poorly defined and the story is overloaded with historical detail. He "tells" rather than "shows" and the plot twists and suspense you speak of are minimal and rather contrived. The story is very dry and the main reason it became a bestseller is because the topic was controversial. Just because a book becomes a blockbuster on the New York Times book review and a movie is made from it does not mean it is well-written. Sorry.

Dan Brown is a good writer (though I don't like all of his books). He writes in a way that you can believe his stories, and that you want to believe his stories. The fact that this happens shows you that he is a good writer, not many authors can do this.
What many people find discouraging about him is they believe that he is trying to show that what happens in the Da Vinci Code is true. It's not. It's a fictional book with fictional characters with fictional plot that is based off a painting and a biblical story. Even some of the facts he uses aren't accurate. Those foolish enough to believe the entire story, and are either for or against it, are just that: foolish.
Don't let them get you down. He is a good writer.

There a bit of both really. While it's truth tha he writes very thrillers, which grip you until the end, his characters are like carboard cut-out, if you get what i mean. There is very little caracterisation, and his research is sketchy at best. In the Da Vinci code, anyone could tell that he had never set foot in paris, as the descriptions sounded like they had been copied straight out of a guide book. There are also several factual errors, such as saying you need a warrant to search a house ( not in france)
All this aside, his books are still great to read.

He's not the worst best-selling author. John Grisham is. But Brown is close. Oh sure, exciting stuff (I guess) but good writing? Well-developed characters? The art professor who manages to fall safely from a helicopter? That's well-developed? Pick any Brown novel and thumb through for some of the worst prose ever sold in bulk:

Random example: "Three rungs deeper, he almost fell again, but this time it was not a rung that caused the mishap. It was a bolt of fear." (274).

Oh, please. And I searched all of 8 seconds for that example.

How about the opening lines of DaVinci Code: "Renowned curator Jacques Saunière staggered through the vaulted archway of the museum's Grand Gallery. He lunged for the nearest painting he could see, a Caravaggio. Grabbing the gilded frame, the seventy-six-year-old man heaved the masterpiece toward himself until it tore from the wall and Saunière collapsed backward in a heap beneath the canvas."

Oh man, who farted, right? How many action novels begin with "renowned curator"? Why renowned? Do we care? I would imagine any curator at the Louvre is renowned, but I don't see how it helps t start the freaking novel with it. Oh, I could go on and on.

I've only read Da Vinci code but I really enjoyed it...he's not as good as some I've read, and he tends toward the more fantastical side of things....but he's obviously done his research, which mot people obviously never bother to look into.
Hving said that, I believe he focuses his stories too much on the fantastic and not enough on the facts...but that's just my opinion.

So much of what he writes is totally cliche. His stories are unique, but I think he's using controversy to replace good story telling.
