I'm not impressed with all these BIG voices like Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey.................. to me it's not just about volume and range.

What do you think?

I think a great singing voice needs to have tone, character and to express emotion.

An excellent example is Billie Holiday, who didn't have the biggest range, and not the most power, but had the most wonderfully expressive instrument.

WOW I agree with you actually lol. Like in American Idol, people would only get far if they have that "strong" voice. I think they have to have that uniqueness to make them different from the rest. I still love Mariah Carey, but it's like when you hear her on the radio, you just know it's her, so I find that a pretty good singer.

There are a lot of different voices, like the is the miley cyrus one, christina aguilera, or even ashlee simpson. But you are right. It really takes a lot of practice to develope singing muscles which will enable you to sing at better tones.
