2 reasons.
Chav's like them because they like to train them to be psycho so they can use them as attack dogs and for dog fights.Having a nasty natured dog is also a status thing with chav's.
Normal people like them because when well trained they are superb family pets.

If you are referring to American Staffordshire Terriers...which I believe you are...
They are popular for many reasons:
1. They are great dogs when bred and raised properly
2. They are very easily attained, lots of breeders
3. They make some people look "Hard", or so they think
4. They are very good looking
5. They are very smart, sometimes too smart for their own good
And last and least favorite of mine
6. For dog fighting.
I highly disagree with dog fighting and I also disagree with BSL.
I have owned/fostered 6 Am Staffs/APBT's.
In regards to an answer above:
Staffies are not smaller than the American Pit Bull Terrier. APBT's are actually the slimmer and more agile of the two breeds. The Am Staff is notably stockier and have larger heads and a shorter snout.
Unfortunatley so many of these dogs have been cross bred it is very difficult to distinquish one dog from the next.

Staffies and other Pit Bull variants are popular with different people for different reasons. In some neighborhoods Pit Bulls are Urban Jewelry. Their main purpose is to enhance the perceived testosterone level of their owners.
But, in other neighborhoods their popularity is based on their hardiness and their tolerance for children. Since they were originally bred to fight, they aren't intimidated by toddlers and they don't react violently to being grabbed by little kids. Some smaller dogs are notorious for not tolerating rough treatment.
That said, living with any of these dogs in modern society requires a great deal of skill to avoid trouble. Staffies are not "flaky". They are not easily persuaded to change their minds, even when pursuing a bad idea.
I believe that Staffies, and other tough breeds are like Porsches, they can be trouble to the less skilled. Goldens and Labs are like Chevys, and most people like Chevys. They are less likely to try to hurt you.

my 19 year old daughter has one,she does agility with it,obedience, its also a pat dog and visits old people homes, its also a really good travelling companion for her,its a nice sized dog, which you can easily take on buses and trains, fits well into family life, does not take up too much room, unlike my Mastiffs,my daughter wanted a dog that would fit into our family life, she did not want a cute fluffy breed that needed constant molly coddling, grooming, carrying, after looking into many breeds of dog for her, we feel this was the best choice, but the dog came from reputable breeders that did all relevant health tests for their breed,we met the parents in the breeders home,Saffy the staffy is now five years old has never put a foot wrong, has always been very clean in the house, and has been very easy to train,I would not hesitate to buy another, worth more than her weight in gold,

i think my staffie is cute, but i do have to say he is a little s*** at times, but he keeps me on my toes, there is never a dull moment with him, as for making me look tough, well he is one of the softest dogs i know,ha i do think they make great family pets though, but any dog would if brought up right.
