It has been suggested to me, by my psychiatrist, that I am a paranoid narcissist. I've been doing alot of research no the web, and am feeling that this assessment may be correct. What frightens me is that alot of what I'm finding says there is no cure or effective treatment for this personality disorder. I'm hoping and praying this isn't true.
Does anyone have experience with this? Can narcissism, or paranoid narcissism, as a personality disorder, be cured or effectively treated, thus allowing the disordered person to lead a relatively normal life?

No, it cannot be cured - it is who you are.

You probably have a great many assets that will allow you to be very successful because of it.

Treatment would entail teaching yourself skills that will allow you to function effectively in your work and personal relationships.

I'd say having it diagnosed and accepting it is half the battle. Recognition of one's limitations is the first step to finding ways to deal with and compensate for them.

I've "seen" somewhere that Warren Beatty is a narcissist - hence Carly Simon's "You're so Vain". I'd say he has a better than "relatively normal" life. Muhammed Ali, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe. Napoleon. It's certainly not a life-ending or bleak diagnosis.

Life is a journey in self-discovery for us all. I hope yours is a pleasant one.

I am not a psychiatrist but in my opinion, I don't believe any psychological disorder is ever truly cured. But many can be handled or controlled. In my mind truly curring any physiological disorder would required rewiring a persons brain and we just don't have the knowledge to do such things. But many things can be chemically treated to help control a disorder. The problem is that no drug works exactly the same way for every person so often finding the correct or best drug requires pushing your doctor to be willing to change drug therapies while trying to fine one that will work for you. Then once on a successful drug treatment you have to be willing to stay on it. So you probably need to work with your doctor to find some treatment but also be willing to check for a second or even a third opinion. You have to be a strong advocate for yourself in these matters or have a love one who can be the advocate for you. Also, drug treatments might not be the only method of controlling the disorder. Other things like meditation or even religion can be useful to help you help yourself. To some degree just the fact that your searching for information could mean that your on the right track. But don't limit yourself to the web. Tons of opinions (like mine) but not necessarily fact. Go to a library and do some reading on your condition.
Best of Luck

OK, now that you've paid for a label ...highway robbery isn't it...you've read. Now what are you going to do about it besides listen to bunk that leads you to believe there is no such thing as out with the old man in with the new.

Each of the things you KNOW people have communicated to you due to your actions towards them....along with things you reconize on your own is all you need for a solution.

Realize this:

My present behavior is unnexceptable towards others. I cannot control people to be all about me. I am not a victim....I'm bullying others and seeking pitty by lying to people. If someone calls me on my actions the first words out of my mouth is " because you". I blame-shift and attempt to control the outcome so people don't believe what they see me doing is real... etc. I need to work on this and life will definately change as my free will i is exercised using positive choices such as love and honesty vs spreading hatred.

Michael Steele, former GOP chairman, suggested an analogous ingredient Obama suggested the day earlier at present......that he has been lower back and lower back profiled and accompanied, and deemed suspicious by law enforcement officials and white human beings. As a white individual, i will say with self assurance that this has in no way happened to me.

The cure is you take more notice of the world and people around you and stop focusing on yourself.
