Depends on when and where in the American South you are asking about. Before the civil rights movement there were two school systems in the south, black and white and the very limited resources went to the white schools where devoted teachers worked valiantly to overcome lacks. In the black systems valiant teachers worked tirelessly to make up for their lack of resources and their own poor education. In the years since the civil rights movement, the resources have been equally allocated, but national cultural values that underpay and disrespect the teaching profession combined with the over emphasis on sports and music to the exclusion of academic prowess have added another variable to the equation. Are ther educational services offered comparable to those in other regions? A clear and definite yes. Are they as well received? Not to a discernable extent.

I lived in Alabama for four years. My son was in the third grade when we moved there. He was far in advance of the other children in his class. He stayed on the honor roll every year he attended school in Alabama.
When we moved back to northern Missouri last year and enrolled him in the seventh grade. He was so far behind everyone else,he had to have tutoring for six months to catch up.
Makes you wonder,huh?

I'd worry more about the inner-city, where education is considered a waste of time.

Thanks to socialized education, we're as educated as the rest of the country....feel free to come down here and see for yourself...just let us know you're coming so we can bake you cake or something.

Yes. They are taught how to shoot and then signed straight into the military. Just like any Third World country.

only on a good day :)) Just remember, stereotypes don't arise for no reason. There is always at least a substantial grain of truth at "the center". Less time spent watching NASCAR, attending klan meetings, and beating their wives, kids and dogs would go a long way toward uplifting the image that the world has re the patriarchy of "our south'. :))

I thought it was all the inner-city schools in the north east and west coast that were turning out morons.
