My father said I should take a look and I was just wondering what the highlights of South Boston were. Looking for an old school, authentic area to float around (plus some tips about the best bars would help).

South Boston is not a tourist attraction unless you want to visit some of the areas films such as Good Will Hunting and The Departed were made. Southie is a lower middle class neighborhood.

If you still want to visit Southie, stay in Downtown Boston...It's just a walk away/few train stops from Southie. There are a lot of Hotels around Downtown Boston/Business District. There are a lot of bars in Southie...then again, there are a lot of bars around Boston. They are not hard to miss.
I don't know what you mean by old school? college...There are a lot of colleges and high schools around Boston, including South Boston

South Boston ("Southie") used to be THE rock solid Irish ethnic part of town but in the last 15 years has rapidly gentrified and yuppified.
Still, most of its tight, rowhouse architecture and narrow streets are preserved and worth a wander. In the centre of Southie is a hill - Dorchester Heights - on which the high school stands - where all the terrible race riots of 40 years ago occurred. It is also where George Washington fortified with cannon, driving out the British during the revolution, which is commemorated by a small park and national historic site.

stay away... the more outsiders come in, the more the neighborhood looses its flavor.. go to Allston or the south end you would feel more at home there
