also, what are the odds of that happening (took me by surprise, didn't know there was going to be an eclipse), and what exactly happened, is it simply the earth getting between the sun and the moon?

Unfortunately I missed it. I live in Seattle and we are to far west (and too overcast). However I was fortunate enough to be living in houston three years ago and that one was pretty cool. I had good pictures throughout the event as the moon passed through both the umbra and pneumbra so the evolution from white to gray to amber then red was quite spectacular.

We saw it here in Puerto Rico, too. There'll be another one in like 3 years or so. Eerie, the moon looked kinda reddish.

I saw it in Spain too.. on the coast 4 hours south of you ..was great.. lasted ages..
