I have pulled a lot out by hand. Everything I have read has said a thick lawn will help to keep crab grass at bay. Chemical are probably the easiest way.

Crabgrass is an annual grass. That means it grows from seed each year, then dies at the end of the year. The way to get rid of it is to use a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring. It will prevent last year's seeds from germinating, and will gradually result in a crabgrass free lawn, if you use it every year.
You should also consider using a fertilizer on your lawn 3-4 times a year to encourage your more desirable grasses to grow.

With work and patience. For, me, I found the best way is to cover the grass with a large tarp- for at least a month or more- in the summer time. That pretty much chokes eveything to death and the grass turns to mulch to feed whatever new lawn will be put in.

Spray the lawn with gasoline, stand back and toss a match. Once the fire is out, rake it and plant new seed... repeat as neccessary.
