I'm an Electrical Engineer, and I'm afraid of shocks too. One principle is that electricity has to complete a circuit in order for the current to flow. So think of yourself as part of the circuit that you want to avoid forming when working or using electricity. The worst thing that you can do is to grab ahold of a good ground like a water pipe with one hand, and then touch a source of electricity in your house with the other hand. The current will flow from hand to hand through your heart (not good). Another common scenario is when your feet are grounded well on a wet concrete floor or similar. The current will flow through your body to your feet to get to the ground to complete the circuit. So wear insulating shoes like athletic shoes and always hold one hand "behind your back" to minimize the possibility of completing an electrical circuit through your body. 3 wire AC plugs are great because the third safety ground wire is connected to any metal appliance body (like a washing machine/dryer etc) to protect you from shocks.

Common sense will ease your fears.
Water and electricity don't mix. Wherever there's water and electricity; don't let them meet.
Don't stick things in a plug socket.
Use appliances as they were designed. You WILL NOT find a new use for an appliance that the manufacturer hasn't outlined on the instruction sheet.
