Something from Sherlock Holmes by A.C. Doyle or anything by Alexander Dumas (The Three Muskateers, Count of Monte Christo, etc.), these are good choices because the stories are melodramatic and have colorful characters.

depends on the number of people in a group... if there are more guys..... maybe from one of the harry potter books.
