It's 17 inches ...and home plate was a key element in one of the greatest on field freak outs of ALL time ...the George Brett Pine Tar incident. Rule said the pine tar could only go 18" up the bat ...they had no ruler so they laid the bat in front of home plate - one look , and next thing you knew it was "Bye Bye, Georgie"
