There is a very rare disease which slows the body's metabolism right down so that they appear "dead". This led to people being buried alive and plays a big part in the Vampire mythos.

Consider the time scale and that medical science wasn't as advanced as it is today and also the fact that people were highly superstitious. Vampire Bats do exist, they feed off Cattle and Sheep, feeding off their blood until gorged and flop down on the ground. This is where the belief that Vampires could transform into Bats came from.

Bram Stoker's Dracula was published in 1897.
