When you've been raped you can lose your self esteem, all sense of worth and pride.

Some people have the emotional capability to cope with that, to ride through it and come out unscathed, other people don't. Some people end up with great difficulties in making relationships and trusting other people.

Becoming a prostitute can, to some people, seem like the only choice. At first it would be something that you were in control of. Just a way of making money, but it can end up becoming a part of who they are. It's a hard thing to get out of.

And drugs? Drugs can often be seen as an way to escape. A harmless something to keep you from hating yourself, a place where you can get away. Most peopel don't realise that they've got a problem, preferring to think they're still in control.

Then of course there are the people who will lie. People who know they've been caught doing somethign they shouldn't, and are looking for a conveniant excuse.

Either way, they'll all have their reasons.

I also think your phrasing of the uestion is unfair and misleading. Not *ALL* people who have been raped end up in those places. Some of them will get up, and be that little bit stronger, have that little bit more resolve and some will jsut not want to let it affect them. Either way, I'd say there are more people who do come out of it and go on to lead relatively nomarl lives than who end up sellign themselves, or getting hooked on drugs.

Not all women who have been raped become prostitutes or drug addicts. But the ones who do have a ready-made excuse if they WERE raped. The fact of having been raped is used as a crutch to explain bad behavior, but it certainly does not cause the bad behavior.

How they hell can you generalise THAT?

Everyone who has been raped must feel low about themselves but not ALL of those poor women resort to prostitution or drugs. Many campaign and appeal to other women to come forward and identify their attackers (if they know them).

But the ones who ARE prostitutes or do drugs are most probably trying to block out the event(s) and feel so low about themselves that they feel they are worth nothing more.
