This has come up before - and the answer is simply that the artist that did the engraving used a photograph of Lincoln facing in that direction.

There is no sinister sub-plot here at all.

Completely irrelevant and not longer even true. there are redesigned nickels that show show Thomas Jefferson a) pointing the same direction as Lincoln on the penny and b) looking straight out at the viewer of the coin.

These "new" coins have been out for a year or more.

There is no "sinister" or secret reason why Lincoln's face used to be differently oriented from the other coins

Has nothing to do with being a Republican or a Democrat, as some are trying to assert. The "looking backward" comment is laughable when applied to Lincoln's Presidency.

Because Lincoln was a Republican. They always look to the past, rather than the future.
