The most recent poll I could find is 18 months old. The following is from the Human Rights Campaign website:

The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press released a new study on marriage rights for same-sex couples in August 2005. According to their report, public support for marriage equality has risen some after a drop in 2003 and 2004.

Since 2004, support for marriage for same-sex couples has risen seven points overall (now at 36 percent), and opposition has fallen seven points (down to 53 percent). At the same time, support for civil unions has increased slightly from 49 percent in August 2004 to 53 percent in the 2005 poll. Opposition to civil unions dropped from 44 percent in 2004 to 40 percent in August 2005.

On the issue marriage equality, opposition has dropped with most key audiences. Most notably, opposition to marriage rights for same-sex couples has dropped significantly among people over age 30, women over 50 and men under 30, people living in the West, white non-evangelical Protestants, white Catholics, Independents and moderate and liberal Republicans.

Sorry elegy, no matter how badly I want it to be true, I cannot believe that 52% of the people in the US support gay marriage. SOMETHING is wrong with that statistic. There is NO way that 52% of the US voted for GWB in the last election when they support gay marriages. It just doesn't make sense. Something must be wrong, but I have no idea what.

I looked at it again, and the math doesn't work out like that with your statistics. It seems like it is closer to 35% for it, rather than 52%. Much more in line with popular thinking. I'm not sure how you came up with your numbers

According to Truth Wins Out, 44% of Americans believe that homosexuality is a choice, and 44% believe that you are born gay. From that, 79% of those that believe it is natural believe in gay marriage, and only 22% of those that believe it is a choice support it. So that adds up to about 52% of Americans supporting gay marriage, 40% opposing it, and 8% are indifferent.

Edit: This isn't 100%, and the survey didn't distinguish between civil ceremonies and bona fide marriage. It also doesn't take into account the people that believe in gay marriage that don't vote, so it very well could be true.

Further edit: Sorry, I added wrong: 44% support it, 44% oppose it, 12% are indifferent.

most disagree in my opinion, but I think it should be put to a national referendumand that will settle it foir good. If the yeas have it then you get gay marriage, if the nos have it the gays have to stfu. ( "Truth Wins Out!" What a joke, the worst bunch of BS propagandists in the bunch)
