I HAVE A 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX GP AND THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT JUST CAME ON. THIS CAR HAS 93,000 MILES ON IT BUT ALL OF THE MAINTENANCE HAS BE KEPT UP.ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO I BOUGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME A NEW SET OF TIRES AND THIS SAME LIGHT CAME ON. A FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME TO HOLD THE GAS PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR WITH THE SWICTH OFF AND COUNT TO 3 THEN LET IT BACK UP AND COUNT TO 3. HE TOLD ME TO DO THIS 3 TIMES THEN START THE CAR. I DID JUST LIKE HE SAID AND THE LIGHT WENT OUT. I TRIED THE SAME THING THIS TIME AND THE LIGHT WENT OUT FOR ABOUT 15 MILES AND IT CAME BACK ON. COULD YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I CAN TRY TO DO TO MAKE THIS LIGHT GO OUT. THANKS LONNIE

Did you get gas recently and left your car running?

Disconnect the battery for about 20 minutes. This should solve the problem. However, if it does not solve the problem, It will probably something more serious!

If the light came back on there is a hard problem. If the light stayed off it was a soft problem. Just because the maintenance is kept up does not mean anything. Have the scan done. It is far cheaper to do than playing the guessing game. A scan will tell a mechanic the code for the problem. Then he must find a cure. The computor will store data for all codes that have been a problem since the last time it was erased or scanned. Sometimes it is best to erase the codes if there are to many. Then drive it to let the most problematic code re-enter into the computor. Fix that first as it will be the most likely one.

This light indicates a problem that the on board diagnostic system feels, from it's sensor inputs, may cause emission levels to be one and a half times the legal limit. It may or may not cause a noticeable performance problem at this time. There are literally thousands of reasons that this light can come on, and hundreds for your vehicle. The only way to get this light to turn off is to have the problem evaluated at a professional repair facility, and then fixed there. As long as the monitor for this system keeps receiving the same inputs, the light will continue to come on, and there is no way to reset it to make it go away. Also, you cannot make a diagnosis off of the code, so if anyone suggests this, they are wrong. The code will be a starting point, and the technician must then track the problem down within the circuit that is indicated. For instance, if you get a bank 1 lean code, this could be caused by ignition, computer controls, air/fuel, or mechanical problems. Another example, one easily abused, is an oxygen sensor code. Most people will say replace it, but what if the problem is in the PCM circuit to the heater? Or, a wire shorting to ground because it's melted on the exhaust? It is important to go further than the code before spending money on repairing this problem.

I can tell you one thing...I had a 2001 grand prix GT and it always had the check engine light on. we spent like 5 grand to fix it and it never staid off for more then 6 months. I do know one time it was on because of the catalytic converter has to be replaced. I would advise you to have a shop look at it and make sure this is not the case. It go t so bad I couldn't go more then 6 miles/hr with the peddle to the floor!! I would also advise you to GET RID OF THIS CAR!!!! It will only cost you more money to continue to fix this car then to buy a new one!! I hope this helps. Laura

the gentle is on because of loss of a catalytic converter. you are able to turn off the gentle by potential of disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes. besides the undeniable fact that, in case you do not restoration the reason in the back of the examine engine gentle, on your case the lack of a catalytic converter, the gentle will basically come back on back very quickly. in case you do not choose to restoration the reason of the examine engine gentle the two positioned slightly bit black electric powered tape over the gentle or do away with the gentle bulb.

take it to a NAPA service center, get a simple oil change and fluids check and have them reset the on board computer
